In 1959, two teachers, KS Varkey and his wife Mariama, arrived in Dubai.
At the time, Dubai was a burgeoning trade centre on the Arabian Gulf. The Varkey family had left Kerala, India to seek a better life for their family. What they found was a real need to educate children arriving in the city from around the world.
Their son, Sunny, added a visionary’s ambition to a practitioner's experience. From simple roots in a family of teachers, GEMS Education, is today an international company with schools and education services in more than 10 countries.
We still share the same mission - to provide a quality education to everyone.
We educate over 250,000 students from 151 countries and employ 20,000 education professionals, specialists and staff from over 80 countries.
From humble beginnings in 1959, we have grown into an internationally recognised name with global reach and reputation. We have offices in New York, London, Singapore, Delhi and Dubai.
In the Private Sector: GEMS Education is making private education more accessible to communities by providing a range of school models with different price points and curricula, so all children have access to the education they need.
In the Public Sector: We work with Governments to deliver efficient, high-quality public education solutions globally.
Philanthropy: Through our philanthropic arm, the Varkey Foundation, we aim to improve the standards of education for underprivileged children everywhere.
In January 2010, GEMS Education marked its Golden Jubilee with a commitment: to improve the quality and accessibility of education for the less fortunate worldwide. This was our primary motivation to set up the Varkey Foundation, our philanthropic arm.
According to UNESCO, around 57 million children do not have the means to attend primary school – and an additional 71 million children lack the resources for a secondary school education.
The Varkey Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving education conditions on many fronts. We also partner with like-minded organisations such as UNESCO, Oxfam and Dubai Cares on a number of these projects.
The Global Teacher Prize is a US $1 million award presented annually to an exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to their profession. The prize serves to underline the importance of educators and the fact that, throughout the world, their efforts deserve to be recognised and celebrated.
It seeks to acknowledge the impacts of the very best teachers – not only on their students but on the communities around them.
We are proud to partner organisations who support our passion for promoting access to quality education across the globe. Some of them include UNESCO, Clinton Global Initiative, Tony Blair Faith Foundation, The World Economic Forum and Pratham.
