Visual Arts is a powerful mode of communication through which your child will explore and construct a sense of self and develop an understanding of the world around them. Your child will be stimulated to think and articulate their thoughts in new ways and through a variety of media and technologies.
Cultivating a creative mindset
Art provides important opportunities for learning, communication and expression. It is fundamental to the development of the whole child, promoting creativity, critical thinking, problem-solving skills and social interactions.
The Visual Arts programme at GEMS (Singapore) is a study of art media, techniques, artists, art history and art appreciation, as well as related techniques and theories, with a goal to building and improving practical skills in the areas of drawing, painting, printmaking, 3D assemblage, ceramics, collage, mixed media, digital art and photography.
Our partnership with Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) provides university freshman courses and credits that your child can attain while still in high school.
This unique opportunity accelerates their progress towards a career in anything from Fine Arts to Industrial Design and User Experience.
Our specially designed Nursery and Early Years Arts programme will enable your child to explore their ideas, feelings and the world around them through a variety of media and materials. Through our hands-on, child-centred approach to teaching and learning, they will begin to develop fine motor skills through art activities involving mark making and painting, and take part in sensory experiences involving sand, water and playdough.
Through our Primary Years Visual Arts programme, your child will be introduced to a broad range of learning experiences where they will learn new skills, develop artistically, make connections and apply their conceptual understandings to invent and create. This artistic journey will allow your child to communicate meaning in distinct forms, develop technical skills, take creative risks, solve problems and visualise consequences. Our young artists’ works of art are regularly displayed around the school and students are encouraged to set up their own individual displays throughout the year.
The Middle Years Visual Arts programme stimulates your child’s creative reasoning skills and encourages them to understand the context and cultural background of artworks and techniques, supporting the development of an inquiring and empathetic world view. Your child will develop their artistic abilities through creating art in ways that engage and convey feelings, experiences and ideas. Each year, our Middle Years students have an opportunity to showcase their artwork in a public setting and connect with young talented artists from other international schools during the annual IN Exhibition, organised by the Australian High Commission. From Grade 9 onwards, Visual Arts is provided optionally within the Middle Years Arts programme. Here, your child can select courses based upon their personal strengths and interests.
Outside the art classroom, your child may choose to join the Art Club, which offers a variety of activities from drawing and creating abstract art to painting murals around the school and designing props for the school musical.
We also offer various arts activities led by professional instructors from external providers to further enrich your child’s education. These include:
